What the judges look for

The 2011 competition involves three judges selecting the best 12 photos (three from each category) to go forward to an online vote. Members of the Chartered Institute of Building and site visitors select their favourite photograph. The image with the most votes wins.

This year's panel of judges include architect, broadcaster and author Maxwell Hutchinson. Sue Steward, broadcaster and arts writer for the Evening Standard, and Matt Wain, award-winning professional photographer from Matt Wain Photography.

To choose the 12 best photographs the judges consider entrants against the below criteria.

RELEVANCY - Is the photo an obvious illustration of The Art of Building category theme?

COMPOSITION - Are the objects in the photo arranged in a meaningful, pleasing manner or are they haphazard? Did the photographer use the best angle or otherwise interesting perspective?

FOCUS - Is the object of the photo in focus? If not in sharp focus, does it appear to be an intentional effect to enhance the image in some artistic way?

LIGHTING - Did the photographer use proper lighting of the subject matter? Do any extremes of darkness or brightness lend to or detract from the image content?

CREATIVITY - Does the photographer display some creative thought or original idea in the making of this image?

CIOB - Would the imagery be suitable for use in Chartered Institute of Building printed and online publications?

SUMMARY - Does the photographer's summary adequately describe why the submission delivers the category criteria?
